Finishing up this book on the Kennedy assassination. Not as good as Jim Douglas's book, but not bad. Good history on LBJ's corruption and criminality.

iPad is the Future

I had a chance to try out the iPad today. After all the hype and anticipation surrounding the device, here are my thoughts:

Image, Property of Apple Inc.A Game Changer

It is not totally revolutionary, but it is going to change computing as we know it. The touch screen technology alone is going to change how we interact with our portable computers. Instead of a mouse, we will use the best tools we have--our hands and fingers--to navigate the web, resize photos, and generally manipulate software.

Extra, Extra, Read All About it.

The most exciting thing the iPad is going to change is in terms of how we view media. E-book readers have been out for years and companies like Microsoft have tried to develop tablet PCs before. All attempts have met with failure (except for Amazon's new Kindle perhaps). iPad makes reading an e-book actually tolerable and enjoyable. I love the real, paper thing, but iPad definitely gives the real thing a run for its money.

The biggest change is in how we will read newspapers and magazines. The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, BBC, Reuters, and other media outlets have already designed custom applications for the iPad. Many more media outlets will soon follow suit. Gone are the days of the static magazine and newspaper. Now, when we read the Sunday Times, it will be a fully dynamic experience utilizing all type of multimedia (video, audio, pictures, etc…). Your paper will also be "real time" in the sense that the content will be updated as soon as a new story comes in. It will be always changing and evolving.

Has a Weight Problem

The only problem is the weight. It weighs 1.6 pounds, which at first does not seem like a lot. But try holding it up trying to read the New York Times for fifteen minutes and gravity starts to reassert itself. Of course, one can always balance the thing on a table, or their knees, etc… But it's not as light at the Kindle, so Apple will have to work on that.

Nice Picture and Graphics

Watching video on the thing is great, as well as looking at photos.

I played some games, and they worked great also.

The Keyboard Dilemma

The touch screen keyboard was actually a better experience than what I anticipated, but does not come even close to the functionality of a real keyboard. Fortunately, you can purchase an accessory that allows you to hook a real keyboard up to the thing. That takes care of that problem, although if you are always on the go, you are going to have to take the keyboard along with you. That could be troublesome.

Overall, the iPad is great for the consumer that does not need the power of a full laptop computer. It is going to change media.  And it is a glimpse into the future--when all portable devices will be touch-screen, and light-weight (one hopes). Props to Apple again.
