Finishing up this book on the Kennedy assassination. Not as good as Jim Douglas's book, but not bad. Good history on LBJ's corruption and criminality.

Why Bloomberg Has Endangered New York

"There's no such a thing as a measured response to terrorism. Period." --Bloomberg, speaking in Israel on December 30, 2008.

No American ought to take issue with another American's right to speak freely, but the recent trip of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Israel must be loudly denounced.

Although it is his right to voice his opinions regarding the recent conflict in the Gaza strip, it is outrageously inappropriate and dangerous for a prominent American official to publicly interject himself into the middle of the Israel-Palestine conflict. No matter what one's views are on this issue, it is not the place of a New York Mayor to travel to a conflict zone and make remarks and gestures that will further threaten the security of the city he presides over.

After the attacks of September 11th, 2001, there is no doubt that New York is, and continues to be, a prime target of international terrorism. Much of this terrorism springs directly and indirectly from the Israel-Palestine conflict. That issue, more than any other, is what inflames and radicalizes public opinion in the Islamic world and beyond. In fact, every major Islamic terror group points to this conflict as one of the primary justifications for their attacks. It is also one of the primary reasons why anti-American sentiment is so widespread throughout the world right now.

For the Mayor of a major target like New York to politically throw himself into the conflict on behalf of the Israeli side directly jeopardizes the security of the average New Yorker. It is not only selfish of him to do so; it is dangerous and can result in disastrous consequences. Why should New Yorkers possibly pay with their lives because of Bloomberg's dual-loyalties and personal opinions?

Bloomberg's recent actions remind one of Bush saying "Bring it on" to the Iraqi insurgents who subsequently did actually bring it on, resulting in many American deaths in Iraq. If nothing else, Bloomberg's actions were incredibly stupid politically-speaking and only go to further polarize the debate on the Israeli-Palastine issue.

Finally, there is already a great sense in the Islamic world that America is NOT a fair partner in the struggle to bring peace to Israel and Palestine. By and large, this view is justified. America has given billions of dollars in military equipment to the Israelis while providing political cover to Israel whenever it acts militarily. The most recent example is the UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire on both sides which was blocked by the US.

This view of an American bias toward Israel has only been exacerbated in the last eight years by the administration of George W. Bush who provided almost unequivocal support for Israeli policy. Bloomberg's recent trip only serves to reinforce this perception that America cannot be trusted as a participant and partner in the peace process.

In addition to his recent attempts to abolish term-limits--a cornerstone of any democracy--Bloomberg's actions in Israel bring shame and danger upon New York. Those who's memories of 9/11 are still fresh cannot help but be horrified at Bloomberg racing to the Israeli border with Gaza and proclaiming that Israel has every right to bomb Gaza back to the stone-age. Let us hope that his words do not lead to deaths here in New York.
